The citizen science project „Obtectus Finders“ is present in Serbia and is implemented in partnership among civil society organisations, educational institutions, and the Institute for Biological Research „Sinisa Stankovic“ from Belgrade. Environmental Ambassadors for Sustainable Development, as the National Operator of the Eco-Schools program in Serbia, and the Eco-Schools network have been engaged over the last three years in collecting and submitting seed beetles (Acanthoscelides obtectus). It is necessary to follow the researchers’ instructions on how to find and catch seed beetles. The most interested in participating are pre-school children in their pre-Eco-Schools.
The citizen science project Obtectus Finders aims to capture seed beetles from various locations to analyze the genetic diversity of their populations. Eco-Schools and other citizens collect many necessary samples from natural populations and enough places. In this way, pre- and school children, but also other citizens, have the chance to participate in real scientific research. The samples sent directly contribute to the seed beetle genetic research and help to detect the distribution of this pest insect. The results will contribute to the improvement of agricultural production by developing methods of biocontrol of harmful insects and significantly contribute to the protection of the environment and human health from the harmful effects of pesticides.
We are continuing our search for seed beetles during the 2026-2027 school year. More about the project at the address: https://www.opasuljise.rs/
